Cet exercice est prévu pour vous donner l’expérience nécessaire à juger d’après les différences d’aspects, l’exposition normale, la surexposition et la sous-exposition, et de démontrer les résultats quant aux teintes, à la saturation et à la luminosité.
Notez donc très soigneusement les réglages de votre appareil vue par vue lorsque vous faites l’exercice.
Choisissez un sujet en extérieurs contenant un certain nombre de couleurs brillantes et fortes, avec un objet important en premier plan, par exemple un tas de potirons jaunes devant une grange rouge, sur un fond de ciel bleu, ou un enfant en veste rouge tenant un jouet jaune, devant un massif de verdure.
Mettez votre appareil en mode manuel et déterminez le temps de pose et l’ouverture à employer, et photographiez.
Sans changer quoique ce soit, faites une série d’expositions de demi en demi-diaphragmes dans le sens de la fermeture d’abord, puis dans le sens de l’ouverture en utilisant toute la latitude de réglage de votre diaphragme. On ne changera évidemment pas le réglage de la vitesse d’obturation pour toutes ces vues.
Étudiez chaque image et observez ce qu’il advient des couleurs, de leur saturation et de leur luminosité, depuis l’exposition normale, au fur et à mesure de la surexposition croissante – puis de la sous-exposition.
Étudiez quelles images sont les plus intéressantes, si c’est le rendu normal des couleurs, ou bien un effet pastel (high key) ou l’accentuation alourdie des valeurs (low-key) qui convient le mieux au sujet et à l’état d’esprit que vous souhaitiez créer.
